Cork Beach 2008

TOURNAMENT DATES CHANGED TO JUNE 7TH & 8TH

30/05/2008
Updated with player fee & meeting place (below)

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for Cork Beach Hat 2008 which is taking place on the 7th & 8th of June at Ballynamona beach in Co. Cork. The tourney will take the same format as in previous years.

The Cork Beach Hat Tournament has been running now since 2004 and was the first annual Beach Tournament in Ireland. This is very much a fun tournament and usually takes place right at the end of college exams so many use it as a chance to celebrate

Hat Tournament? - This means that the tournament is open to anybody, when you sign up use the rating system so we can judge your playing ability from novice to pro. All the names then go into a hat and players are picked out of the hat on Friday night. However it is done in a way where all the teams picked are as even as possible!

The meeting point for the tournament is in the Cottage Pub (previously known as the Thirsty Scholar) on Washington Street in Cork City (see the map for the exact location). The party kicks off at 8 p.m. and there will be an administration table where player fees will be taken, and signup will be confirmed.

Player fees are 15 euro to every player, and it should be noted that players may not play until this fee is paid. (This is cheapest possible, and requires all players to pay their fees in order to cover costs).

These costs cover things such as:

  • One Portaloo for the beach, arriving Saturday afternoon.
  • Food and water
  • BBQ costs
  • Prizes
  • Player pack (including, games schedule, jerseys, and some surprises)

Teams will be picked at 10 p.m. in the pub and player packs will be given out then (if people want). Accommodation is arranged in UCC player's houses on the Friday night. Some of this is in Carraigaline and Midleton so some people who are driving might have to stay sober, and save their drinking till Saturday. (These houses are good for using toilets, and drinking water, which are the main reasons we don't camp on the Friday night, it also adds a bit of variety to the weekend). Saturday morning we go down to Ballynamona beach in East Cork, which is about 35 minutes from Cork City and 10 minutes from any civilization (including toilets and shops - be warned!)

Play starts about midday Saturday. Play goes on until about 7pm-8pm (whenever bad light hits really), and then the party happens. The party consists of a barbecue, bonfire, singsong and generally goes on until retiring to tents on the beach about dawn.

After about 4 hours sleep, play starts again about 11am Sunday, and finishes about 3pm. A quick presentation to the winners, and usual spirit awards, and it's time to get back to Cork in time for trains or flights about 6pm.
